A traveler staggered across a desert, desperately thirsty. In the distance, he dimly made out an elderly peddler with a table covered in neckties.
Exhausted, he pleaded, "Please give me some water. I'm dying of thirst."
"I don't have any water, but why not buy a tie?"
"I don't want a tie, you fool! I need water!" the traveler shouted.
"All right. There's a hotel on that hill, five miles from here. Take that road, and they'll give you all the water you want."
The traveler thanked him and dragged himself toward the hill. Three hours later, he returned.
The peddler asked, "I told you it was about five miles away, on that hill. Couldn't you find the hotel?"
"I found it," the traveler rasped. "But they wouldn't let me in without a tie!"
